Manhunter 2: San Francisco

Summary

This section will attempt to summarize the plot of Manhunter 2: San Francisco, as well as explain the movements, motives and actions of the targets you are tracking.  Thanks to Mike M. and Michael H. (Moneo) for their help and contributions to this section.

The Orbs in San Francisco are using thermal energy to power their operations, which they access by tapping into pockets of lava below the city.  They have discovered a massive pool of lava that would provide enough heat energy to power their operations forever!

The Orbs have been using human slaves to construct the elaborate system of tunnels, shafts and lava gates required below ground.  However, this presents them with a problem: once underground, the signals from the slaves' tracking disks would no longer be visible to the Alliance tracking systems.  To rectify this, the Orbs created the Viewer, a device which allows them to look in on any part of their subterranean operations at any time.

The next problem encountered was that humans slaves tired and died too quickly in the harsh underground environment.  As a result, the Orbs have contacted geneticist Noah Goring to genetically engineer a race of superhuman creatures that can withstand this environment.

Goring's first attempt is a human/reptile cross.  The experiment is not
successful, and the subjects demonstrate incredible hostility towards the
Orbs.  They are imprisoned on Alcatraz.

The next attempt is a human/dog/rat cross.  This experiment also fails,
although the subjects display some degree of loyalty to the Orbs.  They are
released in the Fisherman's Wharf area.  Once released, however, their
loyalty begins to waver and they begin to crave a cure for their condition.

Day 1

Target 1: Mic Stone
Target 2: Unidentified rat-mutant

As the game begins, the Dragon Clan has recently stolen the Orbs' Viewer and placed it in a safe at the Bank of Canton.  The Dragons are a group that is secretly working to help free the slaves who are toiling in the Orbs' underground workings.  With the Viewer, they will be able to see the locations of the underground slaves - very useful in their attempts to free them.  The Orbs are not pleased and have posted a reward for the return of the Viewer.

Two of the rat-mutants (your targets for today) have gotten wind of the location of the Viewer.  The rats want possession of the Viewer in order to ransom it to the Orbs for a cure for their mutations.  They break into the Bank of Canton, kill the security guard (Tad Timov) and steal the Viewer from the safe.  Once outside again, they are spotted by another Dragon, who gives chase.  The mutants kill him as well and flee.

The pair then travel to the Warehouse, intending to leave a message indicating success for Zac West, a rat-mutant who lives apart from the main community.  However, Mic Stone is secretly still loyal to the Orbs (not to mention opportunistic) and has promised to return the Viewer to them in exchange for the posted reward.  At the Warehouse, Mic jumps his partner and the two fight.  The unidentified rat-creature is wounded, but Mic is unable to wrest the Viewer away from him.  Mic retreats empty-handed and his partner leaves a message for Zac identifying him as a traitor.

While the unidentified rat-mutant returns triumphantly to the main rat den, Viewer in hand, Mic travels to the Ferry Building (the Orbs' centre of operations) to report in.  He has failed in his mission, but is hopeful that his efforts will still earn him a reward.  The Orbs are not pleased, but give him a flask supposedly containing a remedy for his condition.  Unbeknownst to Mic, though, the Orbs have filled the flask with a corrosive poison as punishment for his failure.  He heads to a secret hideout at Embarcadero Fountain, optimistically drinks the liquid in the flask, and succumbs to its lethal effects.

Day 2

Target 1: Unidentified Dragon
Target 2: Unidentified human, either a Dragon or a Dragon ally
Target 3: Unidentified Dragon (first seen at The Shop; killed by Phil & Target 4)
Target 4: Unidentified rat-mutant (first seen at the Cable Car Barn)

In their continuing bid to help the slaves, the Dragons have decided to rescue one of them from the Transamerica Pyramid (which houses the main shaft for the Orbs' excavations).  However, they need chain snips in order to break into the Transamerica Pyramid.  They know that they can obtain chain snips from The Shop, but the proprietor will accept only rat-mutant body parts in exchange.  Your first two targets, therefore, set off in search of a rat-mutant.

They encounter one on Pier 5 (coincidentally, this is Target 2 from the first day).  Working together, they are able to muzzle and kill the creature, and remove one of its fingers.  Once this is done, your first target returns to the Dragons' base of operations at the Temple, while your second target takes the rat's finger to the Shop.

At the Shop, he exchanges the rat's finger for chain snips.  Another Dragon meets him outside and the two head for the Transamerica Pyramid.  Once there, they break in and successfully rescue one of the slaves.  They then realize that the slave they have rescued is in need of medical attention and decide he should be taken to a doctor with whom they are allied.  It should be noted that, while underground, this slave has learned the code to activate one of the Orbs' drilling machines, and has written it on his hand.

Your targets bring the slave to a doctor and leave him there.  Then they split up.  One goes to a laundromat in Chinatown to hide out with family members.  The other goes to the Cable Car Barn for a secret and very brief exchange with another one of the slaves, who will be emerging from underground only long enough to pass him a note.

The meeting at the Cable Car Barn goes off without a hitch.  The slave emerges from the tunnels on schedule and passes along the note to the Dragon before retreating back underground.  Unfortunately, that's about all that goes according to plan.  Before your target can leave and bring the note back to his fellow Dragons, Phil and one of his rat allies enter and kill him!  They leave his body in a pile of other corpses, the note still tucked in his belt.

Phil and the unnamed rat next head to the doctor's residence where they kill both the doctor and the slave that was rescued from the Transamerica Pyramid.  The rat tears off the slave's arm and takes it with him.  The reason for this is that there is a secret (and rather macabre) underground economy in San Francisco that uses body parts as currency.  The arm that the rat takes is also the same arm on which the slave wrote the code to the Orbs' tunnelling machine.

After leaving the doctor's house, Phil and his accomplice split up.  Phil goes off on his own, and the rat goes to the Private Club, a secret hangout for rat-mutants that is separate from their main lair beneath the Hyde Street Pier.

Phil's next stop, meanwhile is that exact spot.  He enters through the pipe on the beach, runs in and stabs the Rat King to death!  Then he crowns himself their new ruler and takes control of the stolen Viewer, thus bringing it nominally back under Orb control.  The rats do not resist this move, and hail Phil as their new king.

Elsewhere in the city, your investigations eventually lead you to Noah Goring's house.  It is here that you discover through reading his files that he has been performing genetic experiments for the Orbs.  You also learn that he has come to see the error of his ways, and now wants to atone by driving the Orbs from San Francisco.

Prior to your arrival, Goring sent a letter to the same doctor whose house you visited earlier.  This letter states that Goring believes his first batch of creations (the reptile/human mutants) can help defeat the Orbs, except that they are imprisoned on Alcatraz Island.  Goring knows that whoever makes the journey to Alcatraz will need both an Orb card to activate the scanner that controls the jail cells, and a means of fooling the scanner into thinking it is being operated by an Orb.  The letter also expresses the hope that the doctor and his friends (probably the Dragons) will be the ones to carry out this plan.

During his prior association with them, Goring managed to appropriate (i.e. steal) the required Orb card.  As he thinks the Orbs may suspect that he has it, he cuts open his tie, sticks the card inside and then sews it up.  Finally, he sets out to pay a visit to the doctor to secretly deliver it to him.

At the doctor's place, Goring walks into a terrible scene.  He sees that his friend is dead, and realizes that he will now have to somehow free his creations himself.

Meanwhile, the Dragons have struck a desperate deal to get the Viewer back into their hands.  Since it is now in the possession of the rats, they enlist the help of a rat outcast by the name of Zac West - now considered their "only hope" to get it back.

Day 3

Target 1: Unidentified Dragon; ends up being electrocuted.
Target 2: Noah Goring
Target 3: Unknown; chases Target 1 around the sign
Target 4: Unidentified rat; loses a paw and remains at Ghirardelli Square.
Target 5: Zac West

With his doctor friend dead, Noah Goring decides to approach the doctor's allies (the Dragons) directly to ask for their help in freeing his creations from Alcatraz.  The Dragons, meanwhile, have a problem of their own: the Viewer was stolen from them by the rats (after they themselves stole it from the Orbs), and they need it back in order to be in a better position to help free the underground slaves.  Since Zac has yet to be of any help, a deal is struck: the Dragons will help Goring to free his creations, and Goring will help the Dragons retrieve the Viewer.

Along with one of the Dragons, Noah arrives at Ghirardelli Square and waits below while his ally climbs a rope to the rooftop.  Their goal is to enter the rats' lair via a back entrance and conduct a reconnaissance mission to see how difficult it will be to steal the Viewer.

Things don't go exactly according to plan, though; the Dragon gets caught in the act as he is attempting to enter Ghirardelli Square, and Noah Goring gets jumped as he stands guard below.  His attackers are two of the rats: Zac West and an ally.
